Peoria County Animal Protection Services is offering free cat and kitten adoption through Saturday.
Director Becky Spencer said they’re waiving the 75 dollar adoption fee after an unusual influx of cats this week.
“[Wednesday] alone, we took in 14 cats,” she said. “Typically, in the winter months, we’re taking in about three to five a day.”
There are currently about 40 cats looking for new homes.
“They come spayed and neutered,” Spencer said. “They have a microchip. They’ve been started on their vaccines — a lot of these things that would cost you hundreds of dollars if you were to just go and pick up a kitten off the street. So, it’s quite the deal.”
Spencer said those approved for adoption can usually take their cat home the same day.
Cats that do not get adopted typically stay at the shelter or with a community partner until they can find a family.
