Peoria At-large City Councilman Zach Oyler was formally charged Wednesday with domestic battery and interfering with a report of domestic battery in Peoria County.
Both charges are Class A misdemeanors. Oyler was arrested last month after a domestic incident at his home on July 30. He was soonafter released on $100 bond.
In an order of protection petition filed by his wife soon after the incident, she alleged Oyler took her phone, wrapped his arm around her neck and threw her to the ground. She later locked herself in a bedroom and called police.
Peoria County Circuit Judge Albert Purham issued an emergency order of protection. It has since expired.
More than a month after his arrest, Oyler has not commented publicly on the allegations against him. He appeared at last month's special Saturday meeting on recreational cannabis sales and the regularly scheduled city council meeting on the fourth Tuesday in August after missing previous meetings.
He's due to appear in Judge John Vespa's courtroom at 1:15 p.m. on Sept. 11.
