The University of Illinois College of Medicine Peoria’s cancer research program has earned a financial boost.
The National Institutes of Health is awarding a $1.84 million grant to Dr. Sang-Oh Yoon. He's an assistant professor in the college’s Cancer Biology and Pharmacology Department.
The five-year research project will work to identify why some tumors develop resistance to drugs targeting mTOR (mechanistic Target of Rapamycin). The goal is to identify strategies to prevent resistance, hopefully leading to more successful cancer treatment plans.
Drugs targeting mTOR are used for some patients who don’t respond to surgery, radiotherapy or chemotherapy.
UICOMP is home to the Cancer Research Center and the Center for Outcomes Research.
