The Illinois State Rifle Association is challenging a law requiring more oversight for firearms dealers.
The advocacy group said Wednesday that the complaint filed in Sangamon County Circuit Court seeks to keep the law from taking effect. The law requires gun retailers be licensed by a federal agency and then certified by the state.
The ISRA alleges it puts "undue burdens" on dealers and the state hasn't outlined how the law must be implemented. ISRA executive director Richard Pearson alleges "political gamesmanship."
Former Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner vetoed a similar proposal, but Democrats in charge passed another measure and held it until J.B. Pritzker took office. The Democrat signed it after becoming governor.
A message for Attorney General Kwame Raoul, who's named in the lawsuit, wasn't immediately returned. Supporters say the law would help prevent illegal gun purchases.
