PCAV Applauds Tougher Gun Legislation

A board member for Peoria Community Against Violence says he’s happy the General Assembly approved a measure to require fingerprints on firearm owner ID cards or FOID cards. Bobby Ford says that will help screen out people who should not be owning guns.  But, Ford also says that’s only part of the problem in gun violence.

“One of my concerns in the community is the number of guns that have been stolen from vehicles, or home invasions. There are people being robbed and guns are being taken,” says Ford.

Ford says he thinks training on safe storage and securing guns should also be a requirement to own a gun.

Ford points to thefts of nearly 100 guns from stores in Galesburg and Monmouth early this year as proof society must do more to keep guns out of the hands of lawbreakers. Federal prosecutors have said the men accused of those thefts brought the weapons back to Peoria to split up and sell
