Peoria Police Encourage Neighbors App by Ring

Peoria Public Radio/Tanya Koonce

The Peoria Police Department is joining the free Neighbors app by Ring and encouraging others to consider it too.

The app is intended to provide real-time, crime and safety information. It’s been instrumental in catching package thieves and stopping burglaries. People can download the app without have the Ring Doorbell system.

Peoria Police Chief Loren Marion says all tips people share on the Neighbor app are anonymous, unless the user chooses to self-identify.

“It’ll say neighbor and then it will have number on there. And those numbers are chosen randomly so this is totally anonymous and the resident have to choose whether they want to save the video or not,” says Marion.

Chief Marion says his agency’s partnership with the app allows it to interact with Peoria residents by sharing safety updates. He says the technology does not grant law enforcement access to the data.

The Neighbors by Ring app is available on Apple and Android devices by searching download.ring.com/peoria or texting Peoria Police to the number 888555.
