SPRINGFIELD - Gov. J.B. Pritzker has issued a disaster proclamation ahead of forecasted double-digit subzero temperatures in Illinois, calling the weather "potentially historic."
A Wind Chill Warning remains in effect from 6:00 p.m. Tuesday until Noon Thursday for the entire Peoria Public Radio listening area. Forecasters say the region could see wind chills as low as minus 50 degrees. Actual temperatures could dip to 22 degrees below zero.
National Weather Service meteorologist Chris Miller called the frigid weather "life threatening." He says records going back to the 1800s could fall, and frostbite is possible within 5 to 10 minutes.
Governor Pritzker says Illinois will use every tool available to keep residents safe. He activated the State Emergency Operation Center this week to help local governments plan for the extreme weather conditions.
