Weekend Storm Sets Records

Peoria Public Radio

SPRINGFIELD - Parts of central Illinois registered record snowfalls after a winter storm struck and then lingered for much of the weekend.

The National Weather Service reports 10.7 inches of snow fell Saturday at Peoria’s airport. That shatters the previous record for a January 12 of 6 inches set in 1905. The storm began Friday and lasted into Sunday. It dumped 11.2 inches of snow over the three days in Peoria.

Springfield's state capital also broke a 55-year record for daily snowfall. The weather service says the 8.4 inches of snow that fell on the city broke a previous record for the date in 1964 of 6.6 inches. Springfield’s three day storm total was 11.5 inches of snow.

Jacksonville, some 30 miles west of Springfield, outdid that total. It got up to 16 inches, prompting school officials to cancels classes for Monday.
