Peoria County Courthouse May Get Mural of Lincoln

Doug Leunig

PEORIA - Abraham Lincoln soon could be keeping an eye on the Civil War memorial statue next to the Peoria County Courthouse.

The Peoria County Board Executive Committee has approved putting a mural that bears the likeness of the 16th president on a courthouse wall for the Big Picture Street festival. The event is set for Oct. 13.

The county board will make a final decision at its July 12 meeting.

The portrait by local artist Doug Leunig is called "Abraham Blue" because it is tinted blue. Leunig says he chose blue to symbolize the fact that Lincoln was able to overcome his depression to become a "great president."
