Illinois Central College will explore racial disparities in college policies and practices. The institution is the recipient of a grant from the Lumina Foundation’s Fund for Racial Justice and Equity. The $25,000 award allows ICC to hire a local project coordinator and facilitators to direct discussions on equity issues within the education field.
Rita Ali is the Vice President of Diversity and Community Impact for ICC. She says the project will expand existing efforts to eliminate achievement gaps that may prevent minority students from obtaining employment in high-wage careers.
ICC is one of 19 colleges and universities to receive the grant from a pool of more than 300 applicants. The Indianapolis-based Lumina Foundation created its Fund for Racial Justice and Equity last year in the wake of racially motivated violence at the University of Virginia’s Charlottesville campus.
