Rep. LaHood: 'Tax Reform Plays in Peoria'

House and Senate Republicans are hustling on a compromise tax overhaul this week, in hopes of getting it to the President’s desk by Christmas.

Illinois Congressman Darin LaHood joined House Speaker Paul Ryan in a press conference Tues., lauding the House version as a boost to working class families in his district, which includes Peoria.

“There’s an expression, ‘does it play in Peoria?’ This tax bill plays in Peoria. More importantly, this will get the economy going and help the middle class,” LaHood said.

The Republican was also joined by Conference Chair Cathy McMorris Rogers, R-Wash., Majority Whip Steve Scalise, R-La., and Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif.

The nonpartisan Joint Committee On Taxation says both the Senate and House plans would add more than $1 trillion to the deficit.

“The rhetoric on the Democrats’ side will tell you, ‘this is going to hurt the middle class.’ That is the complete opposite when it comes to my district," Rep. LaHood said.

Most savings from the House proposal would go to the highest income households and corporations.
