Ameren is in the planning process to install a new underground natural gas pipeline in Pekin. It’s being called the Pekin Reliability Enhancement Project or PREP.
The company is still finalizing the roughly 6.5-mile route it will propose to the Illinois Commerce Commission for approval to build.
The new 16-inch steel pipeline will replace the existing six-inch vintage steel natural gas pipeline that’s more than 80 years-olds.

Ameren Spokesman Tucker Kennedy says they want people to look at diagrams of the potential routes and ask questions. “ It’s a very collaborative process. It’s important for us to understand what the issues are so we can factor those in so that we can make the best decision and the most cost-effective decision for the area.”
Ameren will request a 50-foot permanent easement from property owners the length of the selected route.

The power company is working to finalize the route this month and inform affected landowners by the end of October.
Construction of the new pipeline is planned for 2020. It will connect with Ameren’s Peoria natural gas transmission system.
