Former Pekin Police Officer Involved in Standoff

A former Pekin Police officer is hospitalized from an apparent self inflicted gunshot wound. Police were called to Williamsburg Apartments at about 2 a.m., on a report of three shots fired.

Officers attempted to make contact with 41-year old Joseph Wagle inside the apartment. Wagle resigned from the Pekin Police Department in January 2014.

With that information, the Central Illinois Emergency Response Team was activated, and the rest of the building was cleared for safety. Police spent the next five hours attempting to make contact with Wagle before entering the apartment. Wagle was conscious at the time he was placed in custody. His condition is unknown.

Illinois State Police are handling the investigation on the matter and will work with the Tazewell County State’s Attorney to determine any charges that might be filed.
