The Peoria County Sheriff’s Office will see an administrative change at the end of the month. But it may also prove to be one of the most competitive races in the region next year.

Long-time Bartonville Police Chief Brian Fengel is running for Peoria County Sheriff. Fengel made the announcement Wednesday at Bartonville Village Hall with a crowd of people as a backdrop.

Fengel says as sheriff some of his top priorities will be fighting the heroin epidemic and managing budget issues. “I’m going to work with federal, state and local people to try to get some federal grant money. If you saw, Attorney General Sessions released some money. Springfield was one of the communities and relationship building in throughout the county. We need to bring that type of money to Peoria County to help with the problem.”

Fengel’s been Bartonville Police Chief for two-decades and also has a long list of additional community service. He says he has the relationships to coalition-build around issues like the heroin epidemic.

Fengel is seeking the Democratic nomination for Peoria County Sheriff.
