The general election results in Peoria mean several members of the city council will be returning for another term. Peoria Mayor Jim Ardis defeated political newcomer Couri Thomas for a fourth term.
Fi rst District Incumbents Denise Moore maintains that seat with a more than 50 percent margin of victory over David Berry. Jim Montelongo also won another term over challenger for Peoria Police professional Mike Eddlemon.
Despite the fifth district seeing the largest voter turnout in the city at 21-percent, that race is still too close to call. Three votes separate Rita Ali and Denis Cyr, with about 40 mail in ballots still out. Ballots postmarked by yesterday will still be counted.
The candidates who ran local television commercials before the election landed the two at-large City Council seats. Appointed Incumbent Sid Ruckriegel and political newcomer Zach Oyler will fill out the two years remaining on the terms vacated by Chuck Weaver and Ryan Spain when they moved to the Illinois General Assembly.
Democrat Frank Abnour will be Peoria’s next Township Supervisor. The former owner of the Spotted Cow Ice Cream Shop beat Republican Daniel Sullivan for the seat.
The Illinois Central College Board of Trustee race will not be decided until until later this month. The District is comprised of all or part of 10 counties. The results of the board of trustees race will not be official until the canvas is set by the Tazewell County Clerk's Office later this month. As of now the people leading the field of eight candidates for the ICC Board of Trustees are Paula Davis and Kelly Daniels and Carl Cannon. The new ICC Trustees will be seated April 27th and serve six-year terms.
A long-serving trustee will take the mayor’s seat in Bartonville. Leon Ricca beat fellow trustee Leon Ricca. Carl Bishop won the three way race for mayor of Mapleton and Craig Friend was granted a fourth term in the mayor’s seat in Mackinaw.
But maybe the most interesting results of Tuesday’s general election come are in the Hollis Park District Board of Commissioners race. A mother and son are tied. Anita Zeine and Trey Zeine each have 74 votes for the second seat on the park board and there no outstanding mail-in-ballots remaining in the park district’s two precincts.
Such situations are usually decided with a drawing or flip of a coin. Candidates finding themselves in such a situation may also chose a legal remedy.
