The City of Peoria is asking residents to talk trash. The city’s waste hauling contract with Peoria Disposal Company expires in 2019.
The city pays $6.8 million a year for its contract with PDC. That’s the city’s single largest contract. First District Peoria Councilwoman Denise Moore says the city is asking people to weigh in on things like trash collection, yard waste, and recycling.
“We could keep the same provider if it turns out everybody in the community likes them and they’re doing a good job and they are providing the separation of materials in the trash, then we’ll hang on to them, if they are the lowest cost," Moore said. "But if there is an opportunity to reduce our cost but to receive a higher level of service, then we need to look at that too.”
Nearly 40 people attended the first public meeting on the subject last night at Valeska Hinton school. About quarter of the 40,000 households in Peoria participate in recycling. Those Peoria residents interested can still fill out an online survey.
