Thousands of gallons of runoff water from a Peoria Disposal Company landfill was emptied into creeks in a reported vandalism incident.
Peoria County Sheriff Chris Watkins said the vandalism report came from Peoria Disposal Company’s (PDC) site supervisor at 4249 W. Southport Road around 9 a.m. last Friday.
PDC employees told Watkins sometime between last Wednesday and Friday an unknown person knocked down a 10-foot section of chain link fence and turned on two separate drainage valves.
The open valves released thousands of gallons of runoff water into nearby creeks and drainage areas. Employees turned the valves off once they were discovered open.
PDC supervisors also told Watkins a nearby property had a deer stand broken into and three chairs stolen. Two of the chairs were found on PDC property.
Watkins said the incident has been reported to the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency for follow-up guidance.
PDC officials estimated the damage to the chain link fence at a cost $2,500. Watkins said PDC officials think the unknown person drove an ATV to the landfill, due to a locked vehicle barricade.
There’s no further information on the incident available at this time.
