'No Ban, No Wall' Protest Takes Aim at Rep. LaHood

This story has been updated.

Another protest is slated to take place at the Federal Courthouse in downtown Peoria in response to the president’s executive order that bans certain immigrants and refugees.

The “No Ban, No Wall” protest Friday is directed specifically at Peoria Congressman Darin LaHood.

When the protest was announced on Facebook earlier this week, LaHood was one of two GOP representatives of the Illinois Congressional Delegation who hadn’t taken a firm public stance on the ban that’s affected American citizens and green card holders with ties to seven Muslim-majority countries. The other is congressman Peter Roskam of Wheaton.

Thurs. evening, LaHood Tweeted a statement on the ban. His comments don't offer clear language in direct support or opposition of the measure, but the Tweet instead addresses concerns about the ban's negative effects on citizens and legal immigrants.

"I voiced my concern with the administration regarding the confusion pertaining to permanent residents and green card holders," LaHood said in the Tweet.

The “No Ban, No Wall” protest is scheduled to take place outside the Federal Building Fri., from 4:00- 5:30p.m. It's hosted by the advocacy group Change Peoria.

Update | Feb. 3, 2017 — LaHood's spokesman J.D. Alfonso says a statement was sent to media requesting comments on Monday. That statement was posted to the congressman's Twitter on Thurs.

Politico Illinois Playbook this morning reported that Roskam called in to WIND-AM earlier this week and supported the refugee ban and immigration restrictions. "(The) country's safer this morning than it was 72 hours ago," Roskam said.
