The Peoria Fire Department is reminding people about changing their smoke and carbon monoxide detector batteries at the same time they set their clocks back.

The annual fall back time change happens at 2am Sunday, making it 1am.

Peoria Fire Department Prevention Division Chief Phillip Maclin says they are also encouraging people to check the manufacture date of smoke detectors.

“There is an expiration date on those devices. The minimum is 10 years," Maclin said. "So that you want to make sure that if your device has exceeded that 10 years then you want to replace that unit.”

CO Detectors also have an expiration date. Some have a lifespan of 5-7 years. The fire department is also reminding people disposing 9-volt batteries to recycle them or at least cover the contacts with electrical tape before throwing them away.

Illinois American Water has also provided a grant to the Peoria Fire Department for the purchase of about 100 smoke detectors. They’re  provided for homeowners who need them.
