City, Public 'Brainstorm' Possible Uses for Riverfront Property

Plan Peoria

The City of Peoria is taking ideas on the future use of the land under the Riverfront Village Platform.

The 2.5 acre parcel of land is to become public space. It’s in the First District, represented by Councilwoman Denise Moore. She says Monday's public input session is an opportunity for people to say what they would like to see in the space.

“It’s going to be a blank slate. Nobody has any preconceived notions about what’s going to go there," Moore said. "And so this is the perfect kind of project that a city wants where citizens are so engaged and involved in determining what goes there.”

The public meeting Tues. is from 11-1:00. People are encouraged to bring their lunch. It will include a walking tour of the riverfront property.

Assistant City Manager Chris Setti says these input meetings are intended for brainstorming.

“The first rule of brainstorming is you don’t talk about if an idea is good idea or a bad idea. You just talk about the idea," Setti said. "Maybe you get people talking about the idea to refine it, but right now is not the time we’re looking to say ‘oh no-no-no, we can’t ever do that.’”

Setti says vetting the ideas is the next stage of the process.

Demolition of the platform that holds the former Joe’s Crab Shack and New Amsterdam, is expected in the Spring. People who can't attend the meeting can submit their ideas online at planpeoria.com.
