Pekin Adds More Street Features to Entice Pedestrians

Court Street in Downtown Pekin is getting some pedestrian friendly refurbishments. City workers are installing installation of decorative crosswalks  at each intersection between 2nd and 6th streets. Crews are completing the work in the overnight hours as not disrupt business or inconveniencing traffic.

Pekin City Manager Tony Carson says it’s about making everyone feel welcome and safe when walking downtown.

In addition to the crosswalk installation, the project has included new bike racks, benches and picnic tables. Carson says the goal is to ensure visitors and residents alike have an opportunity to experience downtown whether by car, bike, or on foot. He says is part of Pekin’s downtown revitalization and beautification strategy. The Pekin city Council approved the project in May. It’s being paid for through Central Business District Tax Increment Financing.
