US Senator Mark Kirk was in Peoria yesterday for a meeting at OSF, a rally at the Peoria County Republican Party Headquarters, and an editorial board meeting at the Journal Star.

Kirk told people at the rally he is committed to his down state roots, being born in Champaign. He says transformational inventions grow out of Illinois and it’s essential to make sure the doors of opportunity remain wide open.

He says he is particularly excited about the meeting he had earlier in the day at OSF Medical Center.

“We’re going to build a stroke network to make sure that stroke research is second to none right from OSF and when I went to OSF I was blown away by how world class they are,” Kirk said.

Kirk says he’s planning to help secure a $25-million National Institutes of Health grant to accelerate health research in Illinois. He says he would like to see $2 million of it earmarked for the neurology team at OSF.

Kirk told the crowd he appreciated their help and it's paying off. He says the latest poll shows he’s two-points ahead of his democratic opponent Tammy Duckworth.

A statement from the Illinois Democratic Party says Kirk's numbers are from a poll his SuperPac commissioned about a month ago.

The Illinois Democratic Party says a poll they conducted earlier this month of 800 likely voters shows Duckworth up by 7-percentage points, plus or minus 3.5-percentage points.
