Peoria Zoo welcomes new 3-year-old giraffe

The Peoria Zoo has welcomed a new giraffe to its "Africa!" exhibit. The 3-year-old female named Emy arrived in Peoria last week inside a very tall trailer.

Emy was born at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She is 13 feet tall and still growing.  Peoria Zoo staff members are slowly transitioning the giraffe to her new home.

She's currently being kept by herself in an indoor enclosure of the "Africa!" exhibit's boardwalk. But Emy and the zoo's other giraffes, Vivian and Taji, can see and smell each other.

Dawn Petefish is the zoo's collections curator. She says it's obvious all the giraffes want to be together, and Emy will join the others sometime in June.
