Peoria Zoo Lion Cubs Making Their Public Debut

The Peoria Zoo is introducing its new lion cubs. The three female siblings are about four months old and developing nicely.

Kim Scott is the curator of animals at the zoo. She says they are hand-raising the cubs but always from a distance and they never pet or cuddle with the cubs like you might with a kitten or puppy.

Scott says the cubs are weighing between 26 and 33 pounds. “Right now they are at perfect body weights. We actually weigh them every single day and determine their food amounts based on their percent of body weights.”

The four month old lion cub sisters take a break from chewing on sticks and playing with each other inside the lion enclosure at the Peoria Zoo African Exhibit.

Scott says the cubs will weigh between 250 and 300 pounds fully grown.

Right now they are being referred to by number, 10-10, 10-11 and 10-12.

Animal Curator Kim Scott talks about the cubs' development.

The public naming contest begins Monday, March 28. You can find the Zoo's lion cub update here.
