Peoria County voters turn out in record numbers

Voter turnout was 43.5% in Peoria County. That accounts for 47,616 votes cased. It also exceeds 2008 voter turnout in Peoria when Hillary Clinton ran against Barack Obama.

About 6,400 people used early voting and vote by mail. More than 820 people exercised same day registration for voting. Tuesday was the first time voters had that option.

A few Illinois Counties also extend polling place hours to handle increased voter turnout.

It was also the first time a presidential primary election was handled under one roof for Peoria City and County voters. And it will be the last election at that address.

The election commission is planning to move to a larger more city-centered location with population- appropriate parking.
