Hy-Vee Inc. is recalling a batch of blue cheese, possibly tainted by a microscopic organism.

Hy-Vee says it's possible that a batch of Maytag Raw Milk Blue Cheese sold across its eight state region could be contaminated with listeriamonocytogenes. It’s an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in children, the elderly or those with weakened immune systems.

The defective cheese was sold in wheels, cuts and crumbles. The product was sold from cheese cases in all of Hy-Vee’s 240 stores.

The company says the lot in question is: Maytag Blue Cheese with PLU numbers beginning with 854089001 and with “use by” dates between Jan. 20, 2016 and May 3, 2016
