Hy-Vee is changing its controlled substance policy in an effort to combat the nation’s opioid drug epidemic.
Pharmacies of the Iowa-based grocery store chain will no longer fill some prescriptions more than 72-hours early without authorization from prescribers. The move affects controlled substance medications classified as Schedule II, III and IV.
Kristin Williams is Hy-Vee’s senior vice president and chief health officer. She says the policy is one step its pharmacies can take to assist the fight against opioid abuse.
The policy change took effect January 1.
Hy-Vee operates pharmacies in eight states including Illinois.
