A federal grand jury in Peoria returned a 20-count indictment that charges a New Jersey man with tax fraud Thursday.
The Department of Justice says 34-year-old Adnan Rashid is charged with tax evasion, filing false tax returns and mail fraud.

According to the indictment, Rashid was the sole owner of two Peoria area Marathon gas stations and a partial owner of two additional Peoria Marathon stations.

The filing says Rashid allegedly failed to report about $16 million dollars in sales, thereby defrauding the state more than a million dollars in tax revenue.

If convicted, Rashid could face up to 20 years in prison and $250,000 in fines.
