The Illinois Department of Transportation is urging motorists to take special steps this winter to stay safe. I-DOT workers in Central Illinois treat 4,300 miles of roadway with special salt treatments before and during snowfall. Jennifer Rudzinski is with I-DOT. She says drivers need to give plow-operators enough space on the roadway:
“They’re also responsible for setting the rate of the chemical application on the roadway. It’s only more difficult when they have to worry about people coming in and being very very close to their equipment.”
Rudzinski says crews are also specifically treating bridges to prevent frost and ice buildup. She says drivers should always stay off their cell phones when they’re on the road and buckle-up.
