West Nile Virus identified in Peoria County

The Peoria City/County Health Department reports that this summer has been active for West Nile Virus.

Already this year two birds, a horse and a mosquito pool tested positive for the virus.

Individuals are encouraged to take preventative measures to reduce exposure to infected mosquitoes.  Health officials recommend limiting time outdoors during dusk when the mosquitos are most active, and to wear long sleeves, pants, and mosquito repellent.

They say people can eliminate mosquito breeding by removing stagnant water, and reporting mosquito breeding grounds.

The Peoria City/County Health Department is no longer collecting and testing dead birds this summer since West Nile has already been confirmed in the area.
