Alex Rusciano / Peoria Public Radio

U.S. Congresswoman Cheri Bustos stopped at Peoria County’s Heddington Oaks nursing home Thursday to tout the 50th anniversary of the Medicare program and the the 80th anniversary of the Social Security program. To that end, residents sang happy birthday and shared cake. Parts of National Health Care reform have made it harder for some nursing homes to secure Medicare-funded residents.  Bustos says the health care law overall has some areas that need revision:

“Let’s take a look at those demonstration projects and systemize those to the best of our ability. That is still something that is rolling out, and we have a lot of work to do in that area still.”

Bustos also spoke with Heddington Oaks residents and celebrated She was also set to tour a solar-farm in Fulton County as part of a renewable-energy tour in the 17th District. Bustos says supporting clean-energy projects can boost the economy in less-populated areas:

“We have solar farms in rural communities, we have windfarms, I just visited one yesterday in Bishop Hill, Illinois. We have geothermal projects going on.”

Bustos says she supports federal measures that expand the use of solar power in low-income areas.
