Local and state environmental groups continue to raise concerns about pollution from the Edwards coal-plant in Bartonville. The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency is proposing new rules to reduce sulfur-dioxide emissions in the region. Joyce Blumenshine is with the Central Illinois Healthy Community Alliance. She says the proposed state rules don’t go far enough:
“The regulations are not requiring them to install clean-up pollution technology that is readily available, and there is no timeframe. Those are serious problems for us here in Peoria.”
The Illinois Pollution Control Board is having a public hearing on the proposed pollution rules in Pekin Tuesday at 10:30 at Pekin City Hall. A spokesman from Dynegy says the Edwards plant is compliant with all environmental regulations. The company also says it has a formal plan to reduce sulfur-dioxide emissions.
