Lyme disease cases seen in Tazewell County

health.com

Cases of Lyme Disease have turned up in Tazewell County. There are two confirmed and another anticipated case of the bacteria.

People acquire Lyme Disease through the bite of an infected deer tick that is sometimes also called a black-legged tick. According to the CDC, ticks can attach to any part of the body but are generally small, found in hard to see places and transfer Lyme Disease 24 to 36 hours after attaching.
Lyme Disease generally appears in a bulls-eye shaped rash that is often accompanied by one or more symptoms including fatigue, chills and fever, headache, swollen lymph nodes, and joint and muscle pain.

Ticks are most active in Spring and Summer. Precautions to avoid tick bites include wearing light-colored protective clothing and insect repellent containing Deet.
