Rough terrain hampers search for missing kayaker

A central Illinois fire chief says the search for a missing kayaker is being hampered by rough terrain.

Congerville Fire Chief Kevin Wiegand said Monday that Abel Martinez was in a kayak that capsized about 5:30 p.m. Sunday on the Mackinaw River in Woodford County. He said Martinez was from the area.

Wiegand says Martinez was with another kayaker whose boat also capsized. That person apparently made it safely out of the river.

Firefighters, emergency management personnel, divers and a canine unit were participating in the search. A helicopter also was used.  A command center was established at a church at Mackinaw Dells.
