Police prepare checkpoints for holiday weekend

Tanya Koonce

State and local police are out in force for the traditional kick-off of summer. An estimated 33-million motorist will take to the nation's roadways this weekend.

Illinois State Police Sergeant Dustin Pierce says that’s the highest in a decade. He says there will also be many seat belt enforcement zones throughout the state.

“We’ll be using daytime and nighttime roving patrols and stationary seat belt enforcement zone to identify those not wearing their seatbelts. Our message is clear. If you are not wearing your seatbelt, you will be stopped and ticketed.”

Sergeant Pierce says police will also be looking for DUI violations, speeding, distracted driving and those violating the “move-over” law.

The special patrols run through Monday.
