Historic Peoria locations named Most Endangered

Two Peoria area locations have been named among the Most Endangered Historic Places in Illinois.

The Bowen Building at the former Peoria State Hospital made the annual list from the preservation group Landmarks Illinois.  President Bonnie McDonald says a foundation has been working to reopen the building but there are some challenges.

“The Foundation needs to find a developer for the project in 2015 to avoid condemnation and demolition. Eligible for federal historic tax credits, the foundation is hopeful that the iconic Bowen Building can be saved."

Actually located in Bartonville, the more than century-old, three story limestone building served as a state insane asylum.  But it closed in the early 70’s and has remained unoccupied since then.

Also, the group called attention to the upcoming expiration of River Edge tax credits, which can help refurbish properties.   The historic Madison Theatre in Peoria is eligible for the tax break.  The theatre has been closed since 2003.
