Peoria Council moves riverfront apartment deal forward amid protest

The Peoria City Council finished a six hour meeting last night by moving forward a proposed apartment complex project along the riverfront. The vote followed public protest and council debate:

The council approved the River Trail Apartment complex deal eight to three, with some caveats.

Councilmembers want guaranteed replacement green-space taken up by the complex to be placed along the riverfront and better pedestrian facilities in the area. Councilman Tim Riggenbach supported the proposal:

“I’ve got questions about it, but I’m willing to keep movin’ the ball forward to get the answers that we need.”

Several residents spoke out against the proposed development, saying the city is giving up valuable green space property.  City Councilman Chuck Grayeb voted against the measure:

“We have the property now, are you kidding me?”

The proposed deal now heads to the planning and zoning commission.
