Peoria City, County weigh-in on Rauner’s proposed budget

Peoria City and County say Bruce Rauner’s proposed budget carries significant financial impacts.

Rauner’s proposed spending plan calls for cutting local-government income tax revenue by fifty-percent. Peoria County Board Chairman Andrew Rand says that means a $1.8 million reduction for the county’s tax revenue share this year. Rand says the County would have to find ways to absorb the funding cut if it became a reality:

“One way to look at it, that’s probably 20 people. Another way to look at it, is it’s 60 squad cards, it’s salt, it’s trucks to plow the roads.”

The City of Peoria is also looking at an income tax reduction of $2.8 million under Rauner’s proposed plan. But both city and county officials say the plan remains conceptual until lawmakers in Springfield take up the issue.
