Peoria area sites included on national register

The Peoria Warehouse District is among 23 Illinois sites added last year to the National Register of Historic Places.

The Illinois Historic Preservation Agency announced the list Monday. The National Park Service adds sites based on the agency's nominations.

Other Peoria area sites included on the list are the Lincoln Branch of the Peoria Public Library and the Kickapoo Building in Peoria. A Native American petroglyph site near Chillicothe is also on the Register.

The Great Western Railroad Depot in Springfield where Lincoln gave a farewell address in 1861 made the list. Others added in 2014 include the Downtown East St. Louis Historic District,  and the Jacksonville Historic District.

The Strauss Estate in Glencoe is now on the national register. So is the Heimberger House in Springfield and Glen Carbon School in Glen Cargon.
