Tiger pair moves from Illinois to Indiana zoo

Peoria Zoo

Two male tigers born at the Peoria Zoo in Illinois have moved to the Indianapolis Zoo in Indiana. The 2-year-old tigers are brothers named Luka and Maxim. They are Amur tigers, a subspecies that's endangered in the wild by habitat loss and poaching.
The tigers' move to Indiana is intended to increase the genetic diversity of the tiger subspecies. The Peoria Zoo has three tigers remaining on exhibit. Indianapolis had three Amur tigers, but has transferred two to other zoos.
The Association of Zoos and Aquariums manages three tiger subspecies. The zoo transfers are part of the tiger conservation plan.
