PHA sees progress on housing conversion program

The Peoria Housing Authority is seeing progress on a long-stalled program through the Department of Housing and Urban Development It’s called the Rental Assistance Demonstration, or RAD, program:

RAD would have allowed the authority to convert 80 public housing units at Taft Homes to Section 8 housing, giving the PHA more flexibility in selling or transferring property without HUD approval. The PHA has been on a waiting list until the federal cap for vouchers was raised last month, meaning Peoria will be considered for the program. Authority CEO Brenda Coates says the next challenge ahead is to find financing for the program:

“Tax credits would be probably the route that we would want to take you know, to secure financing, and that’s a long process.”

The PHA Board is also set to consider a finalized plan to provide broad direction on any possible future redevelopment projects at its meeting next Monday.
