Peoria County Recorder of Deeds plans to step down

The Peoria County Recorder of Deeds says she’s retiring next month. Nancy Horton says half of her staff is also leaving.

Voters this month approved folding the Recorder’s office into the County Clerk’s office at the end of 2016. Recorder Nancy Horton says the move is creating an atmosphere that's forcing herself and three others to leave:

“The morale is very low. The uncertainty about having to take days off without pay for young families that can’t afford that.”

Horton says the lower staff levels could mean longer lines in the Recorder’s office. County Board member Steven Morris led the effort to consolidate the office to save money. He says service will be protected when employees leave:

“We’ve got a full 25 months from the date of the election to make this work.”

The County Board would have 60 days to name a replacement for Horton of the same political party, in this case a Republican.
