PSD 150 suspensions increase in 1st quarter

Peoria School District 150 is at a three year high for student suspensions. Peoria Public Radio’s Tanya Koonce reports that comes with School District 150’s first quarter discipline report.

Nearly 1,400 students have been suspended on average of two days in District 150 so far this year. It was a first suspension for more than 1/3 of the students and the make-up is two to one, boys to girls. Most of the suspended students are African American.

Fighting, Non-physical aggression and insubordination are the leaders in cause. Freshmen were the most often suspended in all grades, however 4th through 10th graders make up the lion’s share of those suspended.

It might also be worth noting, 72 of those suspended are in kindergarten or first grade and two are Pre-K suspensions.

More than 13,500 students attend Peoria Public Schools.
