Jail being named for George Shadid

The Peoria County Jail will bear the name of a well-known former state senator. Members of the Peoria County Board Friday are renaming the jail the George P. Shadid Corrections Center.

Shadid served as a State Senator for 13 years, ending his political career in 2006. Before his tenure as a State Senator, Shadid served as the Peoria County Sheriff for seventeen years.

Several County Board members are taking part in recognizing Shadid, including Chairman Tom O’Neill. County Sheriff Mike McCoy is also part of the ceremony.
