The Bruce Rauner campaign says it’s time to end political hiring within the state of Illinois. The Republican gubernatorial candidate’s running mate was in Peoria Tuesday.

Evelyn Sanguinetti pointed to the more than 100 people who will keep their jobs within the Department of Transportation. The employees in question were hired in violation of anti-patronage rules according to an inspector general’s report.

She says it’s time to quote, “drain the swamp” and end corruption in the state.

“We should get rid of all these illegal hires and going forward, we should do the right thing, the fair thing which is hiring people based upon merit. It should not be a novel thing in Illinois.”

A local IDOT employee who is keeping her job is Teresa Helfers, according to a list supplied by the Quinn administration. She’s the wife of Marty Helfers. He’s the head of the West Central Illinois Building and Construction Trades Council.

Quinn’s campaign has said the hiring problems were not the fault of the employees.
