The University of Illinois College of Medicine and its four regional campuses are part of a nationwide effort to improve how medical students are trained for residency.
The Association of American Medical Colleges recently came up with a list of activities that all graduating medical students should be able to perform before entering residency. The College of Medicine is one of ten schools chosen to come up curriculum and assessment to teach those skills.
Dr. Meenakshy Aiyer is the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at the Peoria campus. She says the primary objective of the association’s new guide is to ensure patient safety.
“The medical students, when they transition into residency where they will actually be providing more direct patient care, will be able to have the confidence and the skills to ensure that quality care is provided.”
The College of Medicine is in charge of developing curriculum for four different skills. They include learning to work with varying health care professions as part of a team and communication and care during patient transition.
Other schools chosen for the five-year pilot program include Yale University School of Medicine and Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.
