Citizens group aims to curb violence in Peoria

The citizen volunteer group that’s part of the ‘Peoria Don’t Shoot’ program is hoping to deter violence within the city. The Peoria Community Against Violence group is hosting ‘Peace Walks’ in areas where criminal activity is prevalent.

Krista Coleman is the Community Service Coordinator for the city’s Don’t Shoot initiative.

“Their goal is to simply let people know, neighbors and the community-at-large, that violence is not tolerated in Peoria. Violence has no place in a safe community. And those walking all feel that way and want others to know that as well.”

Coleman says there will also be efforts to reach out to residents to find out what’s needed in their neighborhoods. The first walk will take place Friday evening at 6. Participants are asked to meet at 5:45 at the East Bluff Community Center.
