The City of Pekin is prepared to annex nearly 10-acres of land near the Federal Prison on Route 29. The land is the potential location for a marijuana cultivation center.
Dan Joseph is a Peoria Chiropractor and is applying for the cultivation center license. He has an option to buy the land if he and his partners get the license.
Joseph says the state puts very strict requirements on cultivation centers, and this land fits the letter of the law.
Joseph: “I like the fact that it is across from the prison for the security reasons and most importantly for the city of Pekin it will provide 20- 30 new jobs and real estate taxes on a piece of property that’s been pretty quiet over the years.”
The Pekin City Council unanimously approved the annexation of the land contingent upon Joseph and his team receiving the license. If that happens, Joseph says the center would be up and running by the middle of next year.
The state will approve one marijuana cultivation center license in the five-county area that includes Peoria, Tazewell and Woodford Counties.
