PHA to re-establish non-profit arm

The Peoria Housing Authority Board is moving forward with establishing a non-profit agency it voted to create four years ago.

The River Valley Foundation’s mission was to operate the authority’s Access to Resources and Referral Opportunities Program or ARRO. The program helps residents qualify for new housing by providing them with services they need to succeed. But the Foundation’s board hasn’t convened since it was created. Housing Authority CEO Brenda Coates says the agency hasn’t had the manpower to move forward with the Foundation.

The housing authority is now looking to re-establish the not-for-profit arm. The authority needs to partner with a non-profit to apply for the tax credits needed to begin the Taft Homes replacement project.

The River Valley Board is set to have its first meeting Tuesday at five to appoint officers and go over board rules and regulations.
