North Peoria residents open to Allen/Alta roundabout

The construction of a roundabout at the Allen and Alta Roads intersection was the topic of a public meeting last night at Northwoods Community Church.

More than 60 people attended the meeting offering input on how the new intersection should work. Most people were not opposed to the roundabout.

Peoria City Engineer Scott Reeise says people are not anti-roundabout:

“There wasn’t a huge outcry not to do it. It was more about designing the right roundabout and them having the trust in us that we are going to design the right roundabout.”

Some people voiced support for having more than one lane in the roundabout, but that is unlikely due to space limitations. There may still be another public meeting after the community comments are digested and shaped into the proposed design. It will also need the approval of the city council.

IDOT is slated to begin the 12 million dollar Allen Road and Alta Lane reconstruction next month. That is to include the stretch from Townline Road to Alta Road, a bridge over Route Six and the construction of a tunnel to accommodate the Rock Island Trail.
